What is mastopexy?

Mastopexy, also called breast lift, is the cosmetic operation that lifts fallen breasts.

What does surgery require?

It is performed under general anesthesia and aims to excise the excess skin and anchor the mammary gland. Interventions that only excise the excess skin involve smaller scars, but the result (breast lift) is maintained for a shorter period (a few months to 1-2 years). The procedures by which the gland is anchored are more laborious, involving more extensive scars, sometimes an unnatural change in the shape of the breasts that may require reintervention for retouching, but lifting is maintained for a much longer period.

What does the postoperative period entail?

Pain is present, sometimes requiring medication. Your breasts are swollen and tense, they can make your arm and chest movements uncomfortable, sometimes they can present bruises. The bra should be worn continuously for 4 weeks, then only during the day for another 6-12 months to promote the best healing of scars.

What complications can occur?

They rarely occur in this cosmetic operation: hemorrhage (may require reintervention to resolve), serum formation (will evacuate), infection (prevented with antibiotics), skin necrosis ("death" of the skin, delays healing and produces unsightly scars - requires reintervention for correction). Repeated retouching will be needed for people who heal with the formation of unsightly scars.
