What is otoplasty?

It is the cosmetic operation that brings the ears of the skull closer together, when they are too far apart. In children, it is desirable to do it before the age of 7 so as not to suffer insults from colleagues at school.

What does surgery require?

Ear plastic surgery can be done with local anesthesia in older children, adolescents and adults, and with general anesthesia in children who are too young to support local anesthesia. The duration of the intervention is 1-2 hours, and the incision is made behind the ear, so it is not visible. It requires removing a portion of cartilage (concave) when it is too high, thinning and folding another cartilage (antehelix) if it is not bent enough, or combining both procedures. After the operation it is necessary to wear a compressive bandage on the ears which is then replaced with a bandage that is worn for up to 2-3 weeks.

Postoperative period

The ears are swollen, bruised, may have slight pain associated with numbness. As complications that may occur are bleeding, asymmetry (perfect symmetry is impossible to achieve).
